‘Recording the other person’s saying without their knowing is more desirable’ 70% said in an investigation

by 레드로2025 2022. 2. 15.

In Korea, there are quite a few cases in which conversation participants record their conversations with the person they are talking to and later disseminate them to the media or submit them as evidence to the courts. Therefore, the negative view of this has been increasing recently. That is, recording files and transcripts promote a distrustful society. But is that true?

Why do they record? Some media have decided that recording is often done because we don’t trust another’s saying will same in future. What can we learn here? That is, there were already many cases in which the conversation partner changes their words or does not keep their promises in the past. According to statistics in Korea, the 'fraud' crime is higher than that of other types of crime. I think that such a change of words eventually brought about the heyday of the recorded files.

If the other person kept what they said before, even if there is a recorded file, it will not be released to the world. The reason the recorded file is released to the world is that 'the other party is lying and starting to change their past words'. When I was in United States, I knew that lying was considered very bad in the United States, but I came to know that it is very different from Korean society, where the conversation partner frequently changes his/her words.

One of the things that I feel is a problem in Korean society is that people don't mind changing their words or telling lies depending on the situation. In general, the political leaders of communist countries often lie. Even though Korea is not a communist, they lie or change words a lot.

Naver, a big tech portal company in Korea, surveyed on the amendment to Protection of Communications Secrets Act that required a party to notify the other party of the fact that if they record during a call, 19,689 internet users around 2017 which the same as 71.1% of netizens reported that they did not want to notify the other party the fact. In other words, Korean internet users usually want to record the conversation without the other party's notice.

For reference, Android smartphones account for 80% of the Korean smartphone market, and Android smartphones in Korea have a function to record automatically.

Apple’s iPhones do not provide this recording function because the company says people’s privacy is important. Therefore, some Korean lawyer prefers Android smartphones rather than Apple’s iPhones because it supports recording function.

The influence of recording is strong in Korea recently. There was a case that a recording contributed decisively to the acquittal of a man accused of rape in the court in Korea recently. After consensual sexual intercourse, the woman changed her mind and sued the man for rape. This is enough to show how powerful the influence of recorded files in Korea is.
